LFB is active in one of the most dynamic segments of the pharmaceutical sector, biopharmaceuticals, and is among the leading European actors in the field of plasma-derived medicinal products. LFB’s plasma-derived medicinal products, also called therapeutic proteins, meet crucial therapeutic needs in the areas of hemostasis, immunology and intensive care. The production of such proteins requires highly specialized know-how. LFB has grown steadily for several years now and is currently the French leader in this field. This growth is a reflection of the Group’s sustained industrial investment policy in France to double its production capacity and its substantial R&D spending.

LFB’s massive R&D budget is indeed the deciding factor that allows it to both develop a new generation of its plasma-derived products and build up a portfolio of recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies that are so crucial to the development of the Group’s biotechnology activities. The acquisition in 2009 of a controlling interest in GTC Biotherapeutics, a specialist in the field of transgenesis, illustrates LFB’s desire to also invest in new production technologies that, over the medium term, should improve accessibility to what are currently very costly treatments for chronic diseases.
